Change is in the Wind...

If you’re a longstanding Salt & Pepper 30s reader, you’ve probably noticed that it’s been a while (months — eek!) since my last post. While it’s true that I’ve been unseasonably busy with client work this year, I can’t say that’s honestly what has been holding me back. I wish I had a good reason for not staying on top of writing lately, but I don’t. The truth is that I’ve been really struggling to stay motivated with writing after everything that’s happened in our country over the past, well, year or so. As an optimist who writes about the possibilities in our world, seeing the animosity (and at times, full-on hatred) amongst people who claim to be on the same team has been disheartening, to say the least.

Since its outset, I’ve gone back and forth about what content was appropriate for the Salt & Pepper 30s blog. In my site description I specifically cite that I write about anything that matters to me; yet, knowing that the majority of my content is aimed at young professionals, I often pressure myself to keep things work-related. Over the course of this past year’s election cycle and subsequent news cycles, I’ve actually enjoyed my blog being one of the places that a friend or colleague could go to escape the ugliness that has become US politics. I’ve also been keenly aware that my blog following is relatively small, and taking bold stances politically could drive away or alienate some of my readers. So I’ve been constantly walking a content tightrope, which has been hugely demotivating when it comes to writing for the site. I’ve felt incomplete, and if I’m honest, like a bit of a fake by walking this line while having a guiding set of Self-Evident Truths which state that one of the foundations of a great relationship is vulnerability (SET #9) and that you should project something before you expect it (SET #7). I want to have a great relationship with you all and I also want you to feel like you always have permission to be your full selves — both with me and with anyone else. Besides…this is my damn blog! The intent has always been to get out what’s churning inside my head. As such, I need to open up to you.

So, I am writing this post to give you, my friends & readers, fair warning that the blog at Salt & Pepper 30s will be changing a bit moving forward. I will of course continue to write about the future of the workplace and all of the possibilities that lie within it, as changing the workplace is truly a passion of mine. However, I will also be adding in my perspectives on social issues. I will throw in my two cents on topics that may not seem like traditional S&P30 material, but are things that I believe are just as relevant — if not more so — to the workforce of today and tomorrow.

Why am I doing this? I’m a big believer that the world (both in nature and in social constructs) is an ecosystem, and it’s all related in one way or another. I think that social issues do and should impact the workplace. I think politics, religion, and the environment all largely shape my future, so I should be able to talk about them. I want to talk about science and psychology. I want to talk about philosophy. Heck, I even want to talk about pop-culture & sports!

My Why is to catalyze growth in people so that we can build a better world around us. So, frankly, if I think that I can help create an a-ha moment for someone and give them the tools to make their world better, I’m going to do it.

So get ready for some fresh, diverse stuff. I’ll also be adding some of my older personal stuff into the mix. And if nothing else, you should at least see a lot more activity! Thanks to all of the people who have reached out and re-lit this fire under me. I owe you a debt of gratitude :)
